Blockdude for the Gamebuino AKA

A port of the GP2X version of Blockdude to the Gamebuino AKA. Blockdude is a puzzle game: walk, climb and carry blocks to build your way up to the door of each level. It comes with two level packs (blockman, by Soleau Software, and joyrider), three skins next to the default one, and the level editor of the GP2X version, so you can make level packs of your own on the AKA. The graphics, sounds and music are the GP2X version’s, at the same 320x240 the AKA’s screen has.

Controls

AKA In a level In the menus and the level select In the level editor
D-pad / joystick walk; walking into a block or a step you can climb jumps onto it choose; left / right change the level pack, the level or the volume move the cursor
A / up jump onto a block or step up select place the part
C pick up / put down a block delete a level (editor, not in blockman or joyrider) center the level
D held with the d-pad: look around new level (editor) erase all parts
B start the level over   test the level
L1 / R1 next skin / next music previous skin; 5 levels back / on previous / next part
MENU back to the level select back back (asks to save a changed level)

The volume is on the title screen. Quit in the title screen’s menu, or RUN + MENU held for half a second anywhere in the game, goes back to the launcher; RUN on its own switches the AKA off as in every game.

The GP2X had more buttons than the AKA: its B jumped as A does, and in the level editor it hid the grid and the cursor’s position, which always show here.

Installing

Copy the SD_files/BLOCKDUDE folder to the root of the SD card and start Blockdude from the launcher. The folder holds firmware.bin, meta.json, screen.bmp, the music, the level packs in levelpacks/, the skins in skins/ and the LICENSE. The game writes its volume and skin to settings.dat there, and the levels you unlocked in a pack to <pack>.dat. Level packs made with the level editor are folders in levelpacks/, the same .lev files the GP2X version used, so packs can go from one to the other.

Building

ESP-IDF 5.5 and the official Gamebuino AKA library, which is used where it is checked out (C:/github/Gamebuino_AKA_lib by default, or set AKA_LIB_DIR):

idf.py set-target esp32s3
idf.py build

build/blockdude.bin is copied to SD_files/BLOCKDUDE/firmware.bin by the build.

The graphics, fonts, sounds, music, skins and level packs are the GP2X version’s original files in assets/, converted by tools/convert_assets.py (Pillow, and ffmpeg for the sounds and music):

python tools/convert_assets.py <ffmpeg>

It writes main/assets/assets.bin (the default skin, the fonts and the sounds, built into the firmware) and the SD card folder’s music, skins, level packs and screen.bmp.

Changes from the GP2X version

Source layout

The GP2X version was a single blockdude.cpp, split up here:

File What it is
main/main.cpp start up and the state loop
main/titlescreen.cpp, credits.cpp, stageselect.cpp, game.cpp, leveleditormenu.cpp, leveleditor.cpp one file per game state
main/CWorldParts.cpp the level, its view and its parts: the player, the blocks, floors, doors
main/CSelector.cpp the level editor’s cursor
main/gamefuncs.cpp, commonvars.cpp what the states share: volume, settings, skins, level packs, unlocking, the message boxes, typing a name
main/gfx.cpp, sound.cpp, input.cpp, platform.cpp what SDL did on the GP2X, on the AKA library
